History of the Irish blackthorn.
The irish blackthorn walking stick is made from the sloe berry bush ie prunus spinosa or the blackthorn bush, this bush can be found growing through out Ireland in hedgerows and laneways up and down the entire island of Ireland, the irish blackthorn stick/shillelagh has been used as fighting sticks in years gone by .
The traditional way to make a blackthorn walking stick is to cut the wood of the blackthorn bush in the dead of winter when all the sap has gone out of the wood we cut ours in december to january, the stick then needs to be seasoned for at least one year and preferably longer maybe up to 3 to 5 years.
After the stick has been seasoned work can now commence on turning it into a good well balanced walking stick.
